May Day Lectionary

Some weeks and some days there is considerable stress. You are not being unduly concerned, the elite are out to silence you. Your contributions are unacknowledged, your way of living is considered lame, unfashionable, and in some way evil, and what they are trying to do is get us to fear.

Today is 1 May: the day the socialists talk about bringing heaven to earth in the form of a proletarian revolution (but do not mention the body count). You can rely on the authorities and powers of this earth being contrary to the kingdom of God, for they do not see anything that is not on this world. They count divisions, not prayers. Their ultimate sanction is to kill us.

Which at times, they define as mercy. But they are not whom we should fear, for this life is not the end.

4 “I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell.[a] Yes, I tell you, fear him! Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies?[b] And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.

“And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God, but the one who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God. 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. 11 And when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say, 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”

Luke 12:4-12 . ESV

This is a time when we have multiple points of witness. To not agree with the current agenda is to be a witness: to live differently is a difference, to preach the gospel is a difference. To mention repentance is a difference. To acknowledge Christ in a neopagan age is a great difference. These things have eternal value.

And it is only in these things that we will be able to not fear. The currency of this world is fear and power: the currency of the kingdom of God is love, mercy and service. We can choose who we listen to.

Knowing that this elite will fall, as all elites have, and we are called not to be like them. .
