The law of Moses was a law of life, and this is now despised, because many of our elite hate life and hate our species and our nations and our tribes. They often call themselves quite spiritual, wiccan, natural… and if more honest and Australian, Satanic. They choose death. We should not do so.
you have created the heavens and the earth
and made us in your own image:
Teach us to discern your hand in all your works
and your likeness in all your children;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who with you and the Holy Spirit
reigns supreme over all things, now and for ever.
Church of Ireland, Collect II, Second Sunday before Lent
The Law of God and the principles of the law are profitable for us. They show us waht the standards are, limit our greed, reduce the evils of inherited wealth, allow for the land to recover, and return land to the rightful owners at every Jubilee.
No one keeps the law, not one of us: some of the law is deemed illegal byy any country with mortgages and usury.
15 “See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, and death and adversity; 16 in that I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His judgments, that you may live and multiply, and that the Lord your God may bless you in the land where you are entering to possess it. 17 But if your heart turns away and you will not obey, but are drawn away and worship other gods and serve them, 18 I declare to you today that you shall surely perish. You will not prolong your days in the land where you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess it. 19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants, 20 by loving the Lord your God, by obeying His voice, and by holding fast to Him; for this is your life and the length of your days, that you may live in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them.”
Now, you may say that you keep the commandments. I don’t. I know I break them, because Christ took the teaching and unpacked it. I know my besetting sins, and he covers most of them in this sermon.
The righteous of God is complete, and that is why we fear it.
21 “You have heard that the ancients were told, ‘You shall not commit murder’ and ‘Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.’ 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, ‘You good-for-nothing,’ shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell. 23 Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering. 25 Make friends quickly with your opponent at law while you are with him on the way, so that your opponent may not hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you be thrown into prison. 26 Truly I say to you, you will not come out of there until you have paid up the last cent.
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery’; 28 but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 If your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell.
31 “It was said, ‘Whoever sends his wife away, let him give her a certificate of divorce’; 32 but I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for the reason of unchastity, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
33 “Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, ‘You shall not make false vows, but shall fulfill your vows to the Lord.’ 34 But I say to you, make no oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is the footstool of His feet, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 Nor shall you make an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 But let your statement be, ‘Yes, yes’ or ‘No, no’; anything beyond these is of evil.
We have regulations and oaths because we are a society without trust. Two generations ago, if a man said this would happen, it would: for good or for ill. Being a lawyer in New Zealand was a good way to become bankrupt. Now we make more laws a year that ins good for us, regulate everything — and those who willbreak the law keep the forms of regulations why subverting the spirit of the law.
The Jews worked that out generations ago, by Rabbinical teaching piled on Rabbincal teaching. They hated this sermon, for it stripped away the gloss and showed the underpinnings of the law of God.
We cannot make any excuse. We can only reform ourselves, and rely on God’s grace to save us.
Again, repeating the song: and yes, it’s Hillsong. It is only because God loves us that he shows us his grace.
