I hate contact tracing.

One of the charming things about being in partial lockdown is that you have to write down all the time where you have been. Some places have a private app for that. It’s quicker to scribble “D.B. Draught”[1] and a random number. But the government is there to help you, and they have released an app. From their privacy page.

The Ministry of Health has consulted with the Privacy Commissioner to ensure NZ COVID Tracer protects your privacy. NZ COVID Tracer has also been through independent security testing.

The personal information and contact details you choose to register through NZ COVID Tracer (on the ‘register your details’ and ‘let us know where you are staying’ screens) are provided to the NCCS so we can quickly get in touch if you are identified as a close contact of someone who has COVID-19. This information is held for public health purposes only and will never be shared with any agencies outside the health sector.

Any further information you decide to record through NZ COVID Tracer – for example, the locations you sign into – is stored securely on your phone and automatically deleted after 31 days. It is your choice whether you share any of this information with contact tracers. You are in control of your data.

Any personal information you choose to share with contact tracers will never be shared with any agencies outside the health sector or used for enforcement purposes.

So the privacy commissioner has certified the app and confirmed it will not keep your privacy. The NZ contact tracing service will have it, and you will be nagged if anyone with the virus du jour is around. Not sure what my employer will do, but it ain’t going on my phone.

Sola Dei Gloria. Caesar will not get his pinch of incense. Besides, I have this odd thought that we were a free people.

Suppressing liberties is not easy. Particularly so, when this comes together with widespread economic damage. People don’t give up elementary freedoms because some technocrat tell them so and the PM is too much of a wuss to actually make some sensible decision. They might comply for some weeks, if persuaded that it is absolutely necessary; but this kind of fish will start to stink pretty strongly, pretty fast. The youth seem to be the leading edge. Whether 10 or 17, White of Minority, boy or girl, no one really cares a straw.

Let us hope it continues this way, and the general social distancing madness (including the closure of pubs, restaurants, entertainment venues etc) ends because of the silent rebellion of the sensible, hard-working, tax-paying people.

If we wait for Boris, obscure petty tyrants will run us all for who knows how long.

Noncompliance with the petty tyranny of the Karen is always good. Do likewise.

  1. Dominion Breweries (DB) produce an industrial draught beer, traditionally made in Otahuhu, where there is was and is good water. Most of my teenage years I lived in sight of it. To be avoided.
