We are told to desire prophecy, for though the gift of tounges benefits us, the prophetic word benefits the entire congregation, for it is understandable, But all such things should be tested. There is such a thing as false prophecy. Here be dragons, and the further these things go away from the plain word and into legends about saints or hidden prophecies or the utterance of mystics the more I get scared.

In the last time there will be propnecy, dreams and visions. The more frozen reformed forget that Paul taught how to handle such, because all must be done decently and in order.

For we are to be encouraged, and God is to be glorified. He won’t be limited to the model we have of him. I’m afraid that too often I am like Joshua, telling the prophets to shut up because the are not next to the man of God I recognize.

Numbers 11:24-30

24 So Moses went out and told the people the words of the Lord. And he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people and placed them round the tent. 25 Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the Spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders. And as soon as the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied. But they did not continue doing it.

26 Now two men remained in the camp, one named Eldad, and the other named Medad, and the Spirit rested on them. They were among those registered, but they had not gone out to the tent, and so they prophesied in the camp. 27 And a young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.” 28 And Joshua the son of Nun, the assistant of Moses from his youth, said, “My lord Moses, stop them.” 29 But Moses said to him, “Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the Lord’s people were prophets, that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!” 30 And Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.

John 7:37-39

37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as[a] the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Prophecy is not of you. It is not merely being able to see the signs of the times: they are obvious. The reason one studies history is so you are warned of such.

If we have the spirit, he will renew us. In the moment we don’t think it will happen. We don;t know how we will cope, how the gracious words will come, how we will avoid that trap.

It comes not from us, but from Christ. Expect to be driven to your knees: I have and I find prayer hard. But the alternative is a broken state, a slavery that Christ came to free us from.

And we were not called to return to that form of slavery.

FWIW I have heard it said that ‘prophecy’ is not merely fore-telling, but forth-telling. Telling it like it is, and speaking Truth.
