The Virginal was a musical instrument, but for most of the last two thousand years there was but one Virgin, and that was Mary. Pound was reacting from the Victorian Poets, a fair number of whom were embracing old ways, the old religion, and old arts, because they did not need a mad prophet to envision dark satanic mills.

Gerard Manley Hopkins put it this way.

The Blessed Virgin compared to the Air we Breathe

WILD air, world-mothering air,
Nestling me everywhere,
That each eyelash or hair
Girdles; goes home betwixt
The fleeciest, frailest-flixed
Snowflake; that ’s fairly mixed
With, riddles, and is rife
In every least thing’s life;
This needful, never spent,
And nursing element;
My more than meat and drink,
My meal at every wink;
This air, which, by life’s law,
My lung must draw and draw

I say that we are wound
With mercy round and round
As if with air: the same
Is Mary, more by name.
She, wild web, wondrous robe,
Mantles the guilty globe,
Since God has let dispense
Her prayers his providence:
Nay, more than almoner,
The sweet alms’ self is her
And men are meant to share
Her life as life does air.
If I have understood,
She holds high motherhood
Towards all our ghostly good
And plays in grace her part
About man’s beating heart,
Laying, like air’s fine flood,
The deathdance in his blood;
Yet no part but what will
Be Christ our Saviour still.
Of her flesh he took flesh:
He does take fresh and fresh,
Though much the mystery how,
Not flesh but spirit now
And makes, O marvellous!
New Nazareths in us,

Again, look overhead
How air is azurèd;
O how! nay do but stand
Where you can lift your hand

Stain light. Yea, mark you this:
It does no prejudice.
The glass-blue days are those
When every colour glows,

Or if there does some soft,
On things aloof, aloft,
Bloom breathe, that one breath more

Through her we may see him
Made sweeter, not made dim,
And her hand leaves his light

Be thou then, O thou dear
Mother, my atmosphere;
My happier world, wherein
To wend and meet no sin;

World-mothering air, air wild,
Wound with thee, in thee isled,

Pound, who is now about as unfashionable with Hopkins (mere woman yet… would drive most current English Academics into a furious virtue spiral) knew how to write it shorter.

It is the woman who has compromised, and has lost the grace of God, who he shuns. The girl, the bride, the mother, and the matriarch… all reflect the virgin. It is not about sex, and this poem is very sexual: it is about something more.

A Virginal

No, no! Go from me. I have left her lately.
I will not spoil my sheath with lesser brightness,
For my surrounding air hath a new lightness;
Slight are her arms, yet they have bound me straitly
And left me cloaked as with a gauze of æther;
As with sweet leaves; as with subtle clearness.
Oh, I have picked up magic in her nearness
To sheathe me half in half the things that sheathe her.
No, no! Go from me. I have still the flavour,
Soft as spring wind that’s come from birchen bowers.
Green come the shoots, aye April in the branches,
As winter’s wound with her sleight hand she staunches,

Ezra Pound

The virgin married Joseph, and raised Christ. Joseph had his Lady. Mine is Kea. Let us all have ours, and in that we reflect an order divine — which, perhaps, is the one truth in millennium of monkly speculation.

All this is true. But all this is deeply politically incorrect, for it is true. So all goodthinkers disavow the existence of these pestilent generations of poets.

But we are not to be like the goodthinkers. We are to think true.
