Yes, this is late this morning. Kea had a plan, agreed upon. We were going to walk up Mt Iron, and we wanted to get there before it got hot. This is now done, we have eaten brunch, and it is time to consider the word of God. Out of usual order, but sometimes things are out of order.
I think the first passage needs little explanation. It is not time to give up. Instead, it is time to work. Nothing will be given to you on a platter unless you converge, take the ticket, in the full knowledge that you are on the road to perdition and your soul is damned. Do not do that.
23 These also are sayings of the wise.
To show partiality in judgment is not good.
24 He who says to the wicked, “You are righteous,”
Peoples will curse him, nations will abhor him;
25 But to those who rebuke the wicked will be delight,
And a good blessing will come upon them.
26 He kisses the lips
Who gives a right answer.
27 Prepare your work outside
And make it ready for yourself in the field;
Afterwards, then, build your house.
28 Do not be a witness against your neighbor without cause,
And do not deceive with your lips.
29 Do not say, “Thus I shall do to him as he has done to me;
I will render to the man according to his work.”
30 I passed by the field of the sluggard
And by the vineyard of the man lacking sense,
31 And behold, it was completely overgrown with thistles;
Its surface was covered with nettles,
And its stone wall was broken down.
32 When I saw, I reflected upon it;
I looked, and received instruction.
33 “A little sleep, a little slumber,
A little folding of the hands to rest,”
34 Then your poverty will come as a robber
And your want like an armed man.
39 You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me; 40 and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life. 41 I do not receive glory from men; 42 but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. 43 I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44 How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and you do not seek the glory that is from the one and only God? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is Moses, in whom you have set your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me. 47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”
The damned cannot comprehend Christ. Because they have chosen to see nothing but what is in this world. Materialism is spiritually fatal, and without the work of God’s grace the plain meaning of scripture itself becomes obscure.
This is why we should pray before reading, pray before working: we are commanded to pray at all times for all things.
But we then also need to read, and work, and do. For the greater glory of God.
