2 January 2020

This is a time when one needs to consider discernment. There are some general rules here: if the press are pushing a narrative it is reliably wrong; if dissent on this issue is punished the narrative is a lie, and you can judge policies by seeing their impact elsewhere. Something that has not worked in the Netherlands or Zimbabwe won’t work in New Zealand because Humans are more like each other than different from each other.

The trouble with wisdom is that it cuts through pretence. It ignores credentials. It mocks the woke.

The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel To know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of insight, to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity;to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth—Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance,to understand a proverb and a saying, the words of the wise and their riddles. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 1:1-7

What then is the quality of wisdom? James reminds us using a contrast, and let us look at what Godly wisdom is. It has little grey or stupidity in it. It is refined. It is not weak, but it is not brutal. It is disinterested. You can test yourself on these qualities, but the better test is that Godly wisdom leads to action. Invert that and you have what this world calls wisdom.

13 Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. 15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

James 3:13-18

It is totally odd to be talking about peace in a time when the rhetoric is struggle: against the COVID, against the racists, against the Nationalists, and whomever disagrees with the official policy. Peace is being redefined as war. But this is peak lying, and we should expect this. The peace of God, like the wisdom of God, will surpass anything humans can see or comprehend. Their attributions, like the guidance of a blind man, will be false.

But, remember that we are not given a spirit of fear but of hope, faith, and love. So let us take that spirit into 2021 and look forward to brighter and better days ahead – no matter what happens. We have a Power on our side that is infinitely greater and stronger than anything that confronts us and frightens us. Take heed of what that Power says, and align yourself with what He wants for you, and your life will get better in a very big hurry.

Didact’s Reach.

The example this day is an Aussie Papist who had his name and reputation and freedom removed by a series of liars, bribed by the very lavender mafia that has infested the high politics, both secular and sacred. They could not stand the auditing of an honest man. And so he was convicted of the most shameful charge that they could think of. And he is not seeking revenge, but is instead concentrating on doing good.

Pell’s restraint is actuated by spirituality rather than a boxer’s aesthetics but his victory in the hempen square is no less emphatic and his challengers are no less KO’d. Since he left HM Prison Barwon, he has sought no revenge and has stated he will not sue the journalists and broadcasters who defamed him for spite and the applause of the like-mindedly vicious. No compensation will be sought. Pell has neither broken down like Graham Ashton – the police commissioner who once described the Cardinal’s accusers as “victims” – nor scampered from scrutiny through a graveyard like Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews. Instead, the 79 year-old prelate returned to work almost immediately and played the key role in banishing the money launderers and mafiosi from the Vatican. This week’s decree by the Supreme Pontiff that all power over Church monies has been stripped from the Secretariat of State and transferred to Cardinal Pell’s former office – the Secretariat for the Economy – is, in this writer’s opinion, the most stunning high policy triumph by an Australian churchman in history.

Do not look at what the press says. They lie. The ideal position is that you never have to talk to them. Do not look at awards, qualifications. Look instead at what a person does. Consider if their life and actions lead to good and ill. If Moses taught that a prophet who produces false predictions is false, and the mark of a true prophet is that his words are warnings of what God will do, then the mark of a wise man is that things are improved around him.

In this year to come, we need to consider that test.
