One of the odd things about the pentecostals and bapticostals is that almost all their pastors are couples. Both are appointed as such: they come as a couple and go as a couple. This acknowledges that if you are a woman married to a poastor your are drafted into a role in the church, if you want it or not.
I once worshipped with the bretheren, where the rule is more biblical: leadership is for the males. But the wifes ended up carrying some of the burdern. This is human, and inevitable.
THe trouble witth this system is that it does not consider the role of single men, living for God alone, who have been used as the shcok troops fro the church from the very beginning Paul was single. Peter travelled with his wife.
And we forget, at our peril, that it is not us that appoints leaders, but God. It is not aboutl qualifications or intellecutal credentails. It is about character, and the call of God.
All the Levites were called: the leaders and the fools alike, and were told that they would be servants of their brothers the priests, the sons of Aaron, for generations to come. They did not have a choice. IThey were drafted.
5 The Lord said to Moses: 6 “Take the Levites from among all the Israelites and make them ceremonially clean. 7 To purify them, do this: Sprinkle the water of cleansing on them; then have them shave their whole bodies and wash their clothes. And so they will purify themselves. 8 Have them take a young bull with its grain offering of the finest flour mixed with olive oil; then you are to take a second young bull for a sin offering. 9 Bring the Levites to the front of the tent of meeting and assemble the whole Israelite community. 10 You are to bring the Levites before the Lord, and the Israelites are to lay their hands on them. 11 Aaron is to present the Levites before the Lord as a wave offering from the Israelites, so that they may be ready to do the work of the Lord.
12 “Then the Levites are to lay their hands on the heads of the bulls, using one for a sin offering to the Lord and the other for a burnt offering, to make atonement for the Levites. 13 Have the Levites stand in front of Aaron and his sons and then present them as a wave offering to the Lord. 14 In this way you are to set the Levites apart from the other Israelites, and the Levites will be mine.
15 “After you have purified the Levites and presented them as a wave offering, they are to come to do their work at the tent of meeting. 16 They are the Israelites who are to be given wholly to me. I have taken them as my own in place of the firstborn, the first male offspring from every Israelite woman. 17 Every firstborn male in Israel, whether human or animal, is mine. When I struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, I set them apart for myself. 18 And I have taken the Levites in place of all the firstborn sons in Israel. 19 From among all the Israelites, I have given the Levites as gifts to Aaron and his sons to do the work at the tent of meeting on behalf of the Israelites and to make atonement for them so that no plague will strike the Israelites when they go near the sanctuary.”
20 Moses, Aaron and the whole Israelite community did with the Levites just as the Lord commanded Moses. 21 The Levites purified themselves and washed their clothes. Then Aaron presented them as a wave offering before the Lord and made atonement for them to purify them. 22 After that, the Levites came to do their work at the tent of meeting under the supervision of Aaron and his sons. They did with the Levites just as the Lord commanded Moses.
But that was the old covenant, and we are not Jews — well most of are not. We are of the new covenant, and we don’t rely on lineage as a qualification. You don’t inherit the calling of God to preach and to lead.
The church has always said, correctly, that these positions are not to be disposed of by wills of by nobles appointhing their second son to the bushporic — when that happened, there were the inevitable stcandals as his desires for a woman, is anger, and his pride of life took over.
1 Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ to further the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness— 2 in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time, 3 and which now at his appointed season he has brought to light through the preaching entrusted to me by the command of God our Savior,
4 To Titus, my true son in our common faith:
Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.
5 The reason I left you in Crete was that you might put in order what was left unfinished and appoint elders in every town, as I directed you. 6 An elder must be blameless, faithful to his wife, a man whose children believe and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient. 7 Since an overseer manages God’s household, he must be blameless—not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain. 8 Rather, he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined. 9 He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.
I can understand that women have a significant rule in churches. They always have, they always will. But it is foolishness tto aske them to lead the chuch. It is not scripptural. I consider I am disqualified to lead a church because I”m divoorced and remarried: I once said that to a pastor who I thoughty was married once but iwas in the same situation. He was gracious and siad that God can do many things.
But you don’t want to go full feminist. You end up getting comments like this. Gunner Q, take it away:
A week ago, Rick Warren(tm)’s Saddleback megaChurch went full frontal feminist with the appointment of three witches to the clergy. I’ve been waiting for an explosion of condemnation… and heard nothing but crickets. This harlot complaining about people noticing her spiritual harlotry will have to do.
The good Gunner is single. I said single men are the shock troops of the church.
The first reason women should not lead in the churc is that ts scriptural.
The second reason women should not lead in the church is that they are busy enough, or should be. Kea works to exhaustion ost days looking after Casa Kea, helping the kids and her mother, and we limit the amount of work she does un her business I love her and want her rested and happy.
Women are busy enough, and the postorate is a budern. We know. We meet with older couples regularly, a fair number of whom are burned out pastors.
The third reason women should not lead is that men will ignore their teaching , regardless of how righteous it is. We don’t see women as people to emulate. Women will not follow an effete, womanly man, and men won’t follow women unless dirreclty ordered to.
In general, women bosses are horrible, because they see the titile as a nother badge to add to their converged rainbow merit badge sash. The world is not the girl scouts.
This society has gone full social jsutice, whre your qualification is yur perversion, your skin colour, your leftits credeintails but not your competence.
Pault told Titus tochoose godly, competent , exerpeinced men. Who managed their families well. So should we.
