In the time of Christ’s ministry, there was a temple, in part sponsored by the Herodean kings, who were not Jewish, and generally no famine. The Jews could travel to the emple, where ther was sacrifice.
The first part of the prophecy of Jole was fulfilled: Israel had food, and securty. Sort of. The Maccabean Theocracy was creaking and delied of alliance with Rome.
Ons should not trust kings, and never empires.
But the final part of Joel required that a fisheman stood up in the temple and his brothers spoke Greek, Latin, Egyptian and Rethopian. Not the Aramaic or Hebrew commonly used in Judea.
And the spirit continues to fall. The redemptive work of Christ is available to us all.
18 Then the Lord will be zealous for His land,
And will have compassion for His people.
19 The Lord will answer and say to His people,
“Behold, I am going to send you grain, new wine, and oil,
And you will be satisfied in full with them;
And I will never again make you a disgrace among the nations.
20 But I will remove the northern army far from you,
And I will drive it into a dry and desolate land,
Its advance guard into the eastern sea,
And its rear guard into the western sea.
And its stench will ascend and its odor of decay will come up,
Because it has done great things.”
21 Do not fear, land; shout for joy and rejoice,
For the Lord has done great things.
22 Do not fear, animals of the field,
For the pastures of the wilderness have turned green,
For the tree has produced its fruit,
The fig tree and the vine have yielded in full.
23 So shout for joy, you sons of Zion,
And rejoice in the Lord your God;
For He has given you the early rain for your vindication.
And He has brought down for you the rain,
The early and latter rain as before.
24 The threshing floors will be full of grain,
And the vats will overflow with the new wine and oil.
25 “Then I will compensate you for the years
That the swarming locust has eaten,
The creeping locust, the stripping locust, and the gnawing locust—
My great army which I sent among you.
26 You will have plenty to eat and be satisfied,
And you will praise the name of the Lord your God,
Who has dealt wondrously with you;
Then My people will never be put to shame.
27 So you will know that I am in the midst of Israel,
And that I am the Lord your God
And there is no other;
And My people will never be put to shame.
28 “It will come about after this
That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind;
And your sons and your daughters will prophesy,
Your old men will have dreams,
Your young men will see visions.
29 And even on the male and female servants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
1 Corinthians 12:4-11
4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. 6 There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. 7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.
Why do we have these gifts? Why do we sing that there are micacles in our church, and there is healing in the name of jesus? For to live as God lives is now so rare to be miraculous. We are told that we should continue in the progrssive revolution — and looking with older, cyncial eyes at those who ran the rboomer revolution fo 1968 -71 they were revolutionaries or the useful idiots of such, and their polices are now clearly destrutive. Yes, we need to repent. But that may not save us, no more that Isreael’s righteous did not have thier crops destroyed by the locusts in the time of Joel.
I repented before God. Maybe you have repented also. Maybe you know a friend or neighbor or family member who has done the same. Many of us have repented, and thank God for that, but we are a tiny minority. People in the world are convinced of the latest scheme, the newest revolution, and see no need for God. Until we see repentance on a massive scale, until we are greeted by our fellow countrymen with a “Christ is Risen!”; we will simply have to endure the tribulations—the blasphemy, the violence, the grotesque mutilation of children, the psychological torture before the voluntary mass suicide—while maintaining our faith in God, for if the ultimate plan of Satan is to condemn as many souls as he can, to look to Our Savior Jesus Christ at the very end and say, “See, all of them are sinners too!” then our mission becomes that much clearer. We are children of God, not Satan, and we must live it every day of our lives, no matter how evil things get, and yes, it will be so evil that you will wonder if Earth itself has become hell, but God will help us get through it.
The difts we have are for us, comfort and guidance. They are not merit badgees. they are given so that we can be a church and corrcect and survive. We are different, adn we need the passion of a Fracis Xavieror Luther but the rigor of Aquinas or Calvin. We need the mystics, the Orthodox monks, and we need the man who sweeps who farms. We need all typles of people, with all gifts, for the lowers of us can correct the greatest.
Yes we need to repent.
But we need to know that Satan is ragin, for he sees the dying of this light, and with that his time will end.
